North Dakota
Snapshot Both Democratic Rep. Earl Pomeroy and his Republican challenger, Tax Commissioner Rick Clayburgh, say they expect the fall race for North Dakota's only House seat to be close. Clayburgh may be the best-financed challenger that Pomeroy has ever faced, and he is the only one with statewide victories to his credit. Clayburgh has won two terms as tax commissioner, most recently in 2000, when he got 62 percent of the vote. At the end of June, Clayburgh had raised more than $450,000 for his campaign, compared to Pomeroy's $1.12 million.
