U.S. Senate
Walter Mondale (DFL)
Snapshot With Paul Wellstone's death in a plane crash in Minnesota, party leaders again are looking to Mondale to run for the seat, which could determine which party controls the Senate. Mondale, 74, is not saying whether he will run. Wellstone's family has asked Mondale to replace Wellstone on the Nov. 5 ballot, and a source who had spoken to Mondale said he was likely to accept. In 1964, when Democrat Hubert Humphrey left the Senate to become vice president, Mondale was appointed to succeed him. Mondale served until 1976, when he, too, ascended to the vice presidency, under Jimmy Carter. After a failed presidential bid, Mondale went on to serve as ambassador to Japan in the Clinton administration and has worked at a law firm in Minneapolis since returning in 1996.

Nov. 6 -- Exactly one week after he entered Minnesota's Senate race as a fill-in for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, Walter Mondale conceded that race on Wednesday to Republican Norm Coleman. "It appears that this election has been decided and a few minutes ago I called Senator-elect Coleman to congratulate him on his success and wish him and Laurie the best in his new assignment," Mondale told supporters at a St. Paul hotel. Nov. 6 -- Minnesota Republicans are ecstatic, and Democrats are reeling from the near-Republican sweep of the general election. Republicans won races for U.S. Senate, governor, two closely-watched suburban congressional seats, and all but one constitutional office. Political observers say the reasons range from the messages of the campaigns to reaction to the memorial service for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone. (More)
