Education - Attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.; graduated from University of Minnesota, 1951; graduated from University of Minnesota Law School, 1956.
Experience: - Served in Army, 1951-1953; admitted to Minnesota bar, 1956; currently practices law in Minneapolis.
Personal: - Wife, Joan Adams Mondale, married in 1955; three children, Ted, William and Eleanor.
Background: Born in Ceylon, Minn., to a Methodist minister and a music teacher.
Political background: Minnesota attorney general, 1960-1964; member President's Consumer Advisory Council, 1960-1964; U.S. senator, 1964-1976; chairman Select Committee on Equal Education Opportunity 1969-1973; vice president under Carter, 1977-1981; unsuccessful Democratic nominee for president, 1984; ambassador to Japan, 1993-1996. Mondale's selection of Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate in 1984 made him the first major-party presidential nominee to put a woman on the ticket.

Snapshot With Paul Wellstone's death in a plane crash in Minnesota, party leaders again are looking to Mondale to run for the seat, which could determine which party controls the Senate. Mondale, 74, is not saying whether he will run. Wellstone's family has asked Mondale to replace Wellstone on the Nov. 5 ballot, and a source who had spoken to Mondale said he was likely to accept. In 1964, when Democrat Hubert Humphrey left the Senate to become vice president, Mondale was appointed to succeed him. Mondale served until 1976, when he, too, ascended to the vice presidency, under Jimmy Carter. After a failed presidential bid, Mondale went on to serve as ambassador to Japan in the Clinton administration and has worked at a law firm in Minneapolis since returning in 1996.

	Coleman wins; Mondale concedes Nov. 6 -- Exactly one week after he entered Minnesota's Senate race as a fill-in for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, Walter Mondale conceded that race on Wednesday to Republican Norm Coleman. "It appears that this election has been decided and a few minutes ago I called Senator-elect Coleman to congratulate him on his success and wish him and Laurie the best in his new assignment," Mondale told supporters at a St. Paul hotel.
