There may not be another congressional seat in the state of Minnesota that has been so consistently "safe" as that of Rep. Jim Ramstad. First elected to the House in 1990, Ramstad has been one of the top vote-getters in the state and has easily turned aside token opposition from his own party in primaries.
What opposition there has been to Ramstad, has often come from his own Republican Party. He is a pro-choice Republican in a party dominated by anti-abortion delegates. The influential redstate.org has referred to him as a "bedwetter" because of views considered too moderate. Of particular note was Ramstad's vote against $1.4 billion in spending curbs in health, education, and labor programs (the Deficit Reduction Act -- H.R. 4241) in late 2005. But Ramstad's position was "we should cut the pork, not the poor," he told the Washington Times.
Ramstad is a recovering alcoholic and has been since 1981. He has counseled colleagues in Washington with drinking problems and organized a caucus to educate lawmakers on addiction and treatment issues.
Ramstad supports stem cell research and has discussed his mother's struggle with the disease. He called on President Bush to support stem cell research.
In 2005 Ramstad was named chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee, and planned to focus on tax rights and simplification of the tax code.
