Congress Unlikely to Act
I am glad MRP, NPR, and Marketplace are covering this story. I read
with interest the 1994 Minneapolis Federal Reserve Annual
Report/Special Issue, "Congress Should End the Economic War Among
the States". I agree completely with the Fed's assessment; federal
action is the only way to end this disgraceful waste of our local and
state tax dollars. Unfortunately, I think it is pretty unlikely that
Congress will address the issue, since intervening would appear to
interfere with "states rights". This is ironic, since ending the
"economic war" would help states and local governments create
additional capacity to handle the increased responsibilities being
devolved from the federal level in the name of states rights.
