Online Banking: Fees Collected per Billion Dollars on Deposit, US Banks, 1980 - 1995, in millions of dollars

According to government data,* for every dollar on deposit, bank customers are paying more than double the fees they paid in 1980 for ATM use, bounced checks, and other service charges. The American Bankers Association says the fees reflect the expense of providing a growing array of banking services, higher interest payments on deposit accounts, and higher costs.

*Chart is based on FDIC's Historical Statistics on Banking, and was calculated by dividing Service charges on Deposit Accounts by Domestic Deposits.
