District 1 Debates * District 2 Debate

DEBATES BETWEEN CANDIDATES for the US House of Representatives are presently planned for Districts 1 and District 2 in Minnesota. Additional debates may be added.

You are invited to submit questions for the candidates in advance of the debates. Email them to MPR at election@mpr.org, or send them in a letter to Election, Minnesota Public Radio, 45 East Seventh Street, St. Paul, MN 55101. Be sure to identify the district debate for which your question is intended. Questions you submit may be posted within MPR Online.



DISTRICT 1 DEBATES

Two debates are scheduled between the incumbent, Representative Gil Gutknecht (R), and challenger Mary Rieder (DFL). Gutknecht has said these are the only debates in which he will participate.

First Debate
7 - 8:30 pm, Tuesday, October 15
Conference Room A, South Central Technical College, 1920 Lee Blvd., North Mankato

RADIO BROADCASTS: MPR station KNGA 91.5 FM (Mankato/St. Peter) will broadcast the debate live. Both KNGA and KZSE 90.7 FM (Rochester) will broadcast an edited version of the debate the following day during Midday.

Second Debate
7 - 8:30 pm, Tuesday, October 22
Auditorium, Willow Creek Elementary, 2425 SE 11th Ave., Rochester

RADIO BROADCASTS: MPR station KZSE 90.7 FM (Rochester) will broadcast the debate live. Both KZSE and KNGA 91.5 FM (Mankato/St. Peter) will broadcast an edited version of the debates the following day during Midday.

District 1 Debate Structure

  1. Opening comments from moderator with introductions of candidates and three media panelists.
  2. Three-minute opening statements by each candidate.
  3. Two questions posed by moderator selected from a set of five provided to the candidates in advance (the same questions are posed to both candidates). One candidate will answer for three minutes, then the other will answer for three minutes. Then the initial candidate will have one minute for rebuttal followed by the other candidate.
  4. Questions from media panelists. The candidates will respond following the same 3-3-1-1 format described above.
  5. Questions received in advance from readers, viewers, and listeners, along with some from the audience.
  6. Five-minute closing statements from each candidate.



DISTRICT 2 DEBATE

ONE DEBATE is scheduled between the incumbent, Congressman David Minge (DFL) and challenger Gary Revier(R).

Time and Place
7 - 8:30 pm, Thursday, October 17
Bjorling Auditorium, Gustavus Adolphus College, 800 College Ave., St. Peter

Radio Broadcasts
MPR news and information station KNGA 91.5 FM (Mankato/St. Peter) will broadcast the debate live. The station will broadcast an edited version of the debate the following day during Midday.
