MORE THAN TWO MILLION couples in the United States are infertile. For some, the condition provokes an aching emptiness in their lives. Yet most infertile couples never try to adopt. A much larger percentage try expensive, sometimes risky infertility treatments, such as drugs, surgery, and in vitro fertilization (IVF). These procedures can be painful and expensive. IVF fails more often than it succeeds.
