1st District
The 1st District contest features a rematch of Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht and DFLer Mary Rieder. Gutknecht beat Rieder 53-48 percent in 1996 in a race that was the post child for independent expenditures.
The first district includes much of Southeast Minnesota. The largest communities are Rochester, a traditional Republican town, and Austin, a mostly-DFL stronghold. It also includes the river towns of Red Wing, Wabasha and Winona.

Gil Gutknecht
Gutknecht was first elected to Congress in 1994. He grew up in Iowa and worked as a school supply salesman and an auctioneer. He was elected to the Legislature in 1982 and became Republican floor leader. He has a mostly conservative voting record.
