01/09/2001 Bill Seeks to Uncover Racial Profiling in Minnesota A state legislator plans to introduce a bill that will help determine if racial profiling occurs in Minnesota. Rep. Rich Stanek, DFL-Maple Grove, says the measure will provide financial help for police departments that wish to document the race of the people its officers pull over in traffic stops. However, critics of the proposal say without mandating racial data collection, the bill has no teeth.

Many of the major retailers left the area decades ago, leaving boarded storefronts and unemployment. Now, plans are in the works to change all that. Neighborhood groups and local politicians are working together to give a face-lift to businesses and buildings along the avenue. The goal is to restore some of the vibrancy that long-time north side residents say made West Broadway the place to be.

08/02/2000 Haskins Admits To $3,000 Payoff University of Minnesota officials said Tuesday that former Gopher's basketball coach Clem Haskins has admitted making a $3,000 payoff to a former tutor. Haskins told NCAA investigators that he gave the money to Jan Gangelhoff, the woman who admitted writing papers for several basketball players. Though Gangelhoff said Haskins paid her and a U of M investigation pointed to Haskins as the source of the payment, the coach had denied the charges when the school conducted its own investigation.

However, columnist and self-described Mac advocate Rodney Lain, doesn't like the cult-like attitude adopted by some Mac-enthusiasts. Lain says Apple Computers, the maker of the MacIntosh, is just a company, not an idol of worship.
