Initial data, released in March 2001, shows Minnesota has a larger Hispanic population than a decade ago, that rural Minnesota is becoming less populated, and that suburbs are assuming more population and, presumably, power. Overall, the census of 2000 shows that the definition of a Minnesotan is being rewritten.

03/12/2001 A Question of Dignity Every year, Minnesota spends $850 million caring for the state's elderly in nursing homes. As baby-boomers approach retirement, long-term care experts worry that unless changes occur, those costs could skyrocket. A tripartisan task force studied the issue last summer and wants the state to meet consumer demand by creating a better system of home and community-based care. But the transformation will not be cheap.

02/07/2000 Guinea Pig Kids Minnesota is two years away from requiring its high school graduates to meet a new set of standards to earn their diplomas. The standards, which include basic skills tests and a unique set of performance assessments called the Profile of Learning, have been the subject of considerable debate in recent years. Most reporting on the standards has focused on the debate in political arenas, so Minnesota Public Radio sent a trio of reporters into high schools to observe how teachers, parents and, most of all, students are coping with the graduation standards.
