Veteran Twin Cities acoustic guitarist Billy McLaughlin has reached a turning point in his career. Health problems are forcing him to, for the most part, lay down his instrument.

St. Paul, Minn. — McLaughlin, a five-time Minnesota Music Award winner, has been diagnosed with focal dystonia, a neurological movement disorder. In McLaughlin's case, it was brought on by years of intricate finger movements. The disorder means he has had to dramatically alter the way he plays the guitar, and caused him to cut back his live performances.

McLaughlin has toured almost constantly for the past 15 years, including stops in Japan and Europe. Critics around the globe recognize Billy as an innovative world-class acoustic guitarist, composer, and producer.

But after his diagnosis, McLaughlin has only a handful of concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future, including shows in Duluth and Minneapolis this weekend. MPR's Steven John recently spoke with Billy about his music and his future as a performer.
