Bharati Mukherjee (Courtesy of Hyperion Books)

St. Paul, Minn. — In Bharati Mukherjee's bestselling novel "Desirable Daughters" she told the story of woman sent from India to San Francisco for an arranged marriage to a successful software developer. Her new novel continues Tara Chatterjee's story—but does it by looking back in time.

In "The Tree Bride" Tara learns how two Englishmen, who had a profound impact on her ancestors lives, have shaped her own history. Bharati Mukherjee told Minnesota Public Radio's Euan Kerr she knew she had to write the story when she finished the final scene of the first book.
