St. Paul, Minn. — (AP) Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't talk politics during a Monday afternoon visit. Instead she chatted with a group of kids who work at a community youth garden.

"My mom always had a nice garden, and I love flowers and plants," said Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. "Coming from Africa, you grow everything you eat, or buy it live."

Heinz Kerry was born in Mozambique, the daughter of a Portuguese doctor and his British-born wife.

She said her time on the campaign trail has left her little time to work in the garden at her farm near Pittsburgh.

Heinz Kerry did come to Minnesota for politicking - she was headlining a fund-raiser at the Minneapolis Club that was sponsored by the Democratic National Committee. But her Minnesota communications director, Stacie Paxton, said Heinz Kerry likes on campaign swings to visit community ventures.

"She has a connection to gardening and farming and she loves spending time with children," Paxton said. "Obviously this was a natural for her."

The Youth Farm and Market Project has three sites in the Twin Cities. It aims to teach children from urban families about growing, cooking and marketing food.
