St. Paul, Minn. — Some of the music you enjoy listening to comes wrapped in very cool packages. And some of the most memorable album covers are on display at a local gallery -- courtesy of Richard Shelton.

Shelton, a local artist and music historian, pays close attention to the kind of artwork you see on album covers. Shelton has a library of some 18,000 albums, and he's picked almost 300 of them to feature in the exhibition, which is now open at the Goldstein Museum of Design on the University of Minnesota campus in St. Paul.

The exhibition examines the relationships between popular music and the graphic art of its packaging. Shelton's collection spans half of the 20th century, and most musical genres. Curated by Richard Shelton and Steven McCarthy. Shelton talked with Mary Lucia, host on 89.3 The Current, about why he started collecting album cover art.
