Minneapolis, Minn. — (AP) - Though Janel McCarville will be difficult for Minnesota to replace next season, Jamie Broback has already shown she can be the Gophers' go-to inside player.
While McCarville made only three field goals, Broback had 23 points and five rebounds to help third-seeded Minnesota beat Virginia 73-58 on Monday and advance again to the regional semifinals.
In her final home game, McCarville went 3-for-7 from the floor and finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and four fouls - blowing a kiss and waving to the roaring Williams Arena crowd of 10,043 as she left.
But Broback, a sophomore who emerged as the Gophers' second-leading scorer, kept Minnesota's offense in step. Shannon Schonrock added 11 points and Shannon Bolden had 10 points for the Gophers (26-7), who play second-seeded Baylor in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday night - their third straight trip to the round of 16.
Freshman Sharnee Zoll led sixth-seeded Virginia with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting, and LaTonya Blue added 16 points. The Cavaliers (21-11), outrebounded 41-30, watched leading scorer Brandi Teamer struggle with two points on 1-for-9 shooting. McCarville picked up her second foul and sat for the last 10 minutes of the first half, leaving Broback and Schonrock to do most of the work. They each scored eight points before the break, and Schonrock hit two of Minnesota's four 3-pointers.
The Gophers struggled when they let impatient offense give the quicker Cavaliers chances to get out and run. Virginia led 14-7 early after a fast-break 3-pointer by Brenna McGuire, and Blue stole the ball from April Calhoun and took it the other way for a layup to cut Minnesota's lead to 34-28 at the half.
But when they worked their half-court sets, the Gophers were clearly superior. Broback's short jumper capped an 11-0 run and gave them a 25-20 lead they never relinquished.
When McCarville doesn't score much, she still makes an impact, and Blue can sure attest to that. Guarding Calhoun as she brought the ball up early in the second half, Blue didn't see the 6-foot-4 McCarville camped at halfcourt for a bone-jarring screen that knocked her to the floor. Blue didn't see the intimidating stare McCarville shot down at her, because she was covering her face in pain.
Later, McCarville found Kelly Roysland on a sneaky backdoor pass for a layup and a 57-40 lead with a little over 7 minutes left. That came in the middle of an 18-2 run by Minnesota that lasted more than 8 minutes and put the game away.
Minnesota will play second-seeded Baylor in the Tempe Regional on Saturday, March 26.
