The Minnesota Department of Education surveys students across the state each year about issues ranging from smoking to dating to suicide. The most recent responses show a far higher tendency toward suicide on the Red Lake reservation, compared with students statewide.

Red Lake ninth graders: males 20%, females 62%
Statewide ninth graders: males 15%, females 28%
QUESTION: Have you tried to kill yourself during the last year?
Red Lake ninth graders: males 13%, females 37%
Statewide ninth graders: males 4%, females 10%
