What to donate
Food shelf organizers have some suggestions for how to make your food donations do the most good.

— Food shelves say the following food items are needed the most:

Cereal; canned corn, beans and peas; canned fruit; peanut butter and jelly; canned meats; tuna and Enfamil Lipil baby formula.

Donors are also asked to provide food they would feed their own families, and include all the main ingredients for a meal. For example, providing spaghetti sauce along with pasta, or a boxed meal mix such as Tuna Helper along with canned tuna.

Staple foods for lunches and dinners, rather than sweets and desserts, are in greater demand.

Some food shelves also provide hygiene and baby care items. They ask for donations of toilet paper, facial tissue, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and baby wipes. Larger-sized diapers are also needed.
