St. Paul, Minn. — Mercy Watson is a pig with a passion for buttered toast. She's also the main character in "Mercy Watson to the Rescue," a new book from Minneapolis children's author Kate DiCamillo.

Mercy is selfish, perpetually hungry and gets into non-stop trouble. But her owners, the Watsons, still love her.

DiCamillo is perhaps best-known for her award-winning book "Because of Winn-Dixie," which was made into a feature film earlier this year. Her book, "The Tale of Despereaux," won the 2004 Newbery Medal for children's literature.

"Mercy Watson to the Rescue" is the first of a series of six books DiCamillo plans to write about this porcine heroine.

Like the dog and the mouse who are main characters in her earlier books, DiCamillo told MPR's Greta Cunningham that Mercy Watson is a very special animal. To listen to their interview, choose the audio link in the right column.
