St. Paul, Minn. — On April 18th 1906 a massive earthquake shattered much of San Francisco, and started the fires which then burned much of what remained.
The cataclysmic event changed how the world viewed such catastrophes. San Franciscans rebuilt their city, but they have been waiting ever since and with increasing concern, about the next quake. They refer to it as, "the big one."
In his new book "A Crack in the End of the World" Simon Winchester explores what happened on that April day 99 years ago, and what led up to it.
He says the people of San Francisco had no idea what was coming.
