This is a mattock, the main tool used to carve new trail from the forest floor. Forest firefighters use a similar tool called a 'Pulaski,' in honor of Edward C. Pulaski, who's credited with its invention. While a pulaski is intended to cut wood, the mattock is useful for grubbing roots and rocks. (MPR Photo/Bob Kelleher)
