This family photo shows Terri Schiavo before she fell ill. Schiavo had a heart attack in 1990, at the age of 26. Her brain was starved of oxygen and she fell into what some doctors call a "persistent vegetative state," a diagnosis later accepted by state courts. Since then, she has lived in nursing homes and is fed and hydrated by tubes. |
