One of Minnesota's most famous sons slipped away Saturday morning. Eugene McCarthy, the Minnesota senator whose 1968 presidential campaign energized the anti-Vietnam War movement, is no longer with us, but his friends and admirers will never forget him.

Bar owners rejoiced Tuesday as the Hennepin County Board scaled back its smoking ban for private clubs and traditional bars. More restrictive bans remain in effect in several cities within the county, including Minneapolis. What will happen next in the ongoing battle over smoking in public places?

The Minnesota movie "North Country" garnered two Golden Globe nominations Tuesday: for best actress (Charlize Theron) and best supporting actress (Frances McDormand.) It is the story of the women in Minnesota's iron mines who made history with America's first class action sexual harassment lawsuit.

The Star Tribune's Jim Boyd was awarded the American Academy of Diplomacy's 2005 Arthur Ross Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis on Foreign Affairs.
