Idea for: Transportation
Create a state fund for small city transportation I just came across some interesting information about a grant program in the State of Washington that provides funding to small towns (less than 5000 population) for various transportation projects. The funding is distributed through the Washington State Transportation Investment Board. Transportation funding for small cities is something that has been identified as a need in Minnesota. Here's a link with some additional information about Washington State's TIB Small City Funding Programs: http://www.tib.wa.gov/SmallCity/SmallCity.htm From Wayne Hurley of Fergus Falls, MN on 05/11/05 Rating: We need park and ride lots with a network of busses to regional employment centers. And the ability to use/get more funds for alternate tourism transit: bike paths, walking, x-sking, water... From James Jencks of Mantorville, MN on 07/15/05 Rating: As a few folks have pointed out, Minnesota does have the County State Aid Highway (CSAH) fund which funds designated county roads, including those in small cities. There is also the Municipal State Aid fund, which funds designated city streets in cities over 5000 population. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent program for cities with a population of less than 5000. That's where the need comes in. I'm not sure if the Washington program is the answer, but it might be something to look at. From Wayne Hurley of Fergus Falls, MN on 05/18/05 Rating: As mentioned above, we already have something of a program for this in place. The state legislature is also considering dedicating 3/8 of a cent from the sales tax in the metro to transit--80% to the metro and 20% to outstate MN (I don't use 'Greater MN' b/c it sounds too close to 'Greater Serbia' which wasn't a good idea). After reading a few of these it seems like fast transportation to/from the Cities is a recurring theme. I wonder if combining this w/ 3 10-12 hr. shift jobs would work. From Glenn Kuehne of Alexandria, MN on 05/15/05 Rating: In addition to tranportation between areas there is a need for it within as well. Low income rural citizens have major problems getting to services, shopping, jobs, etc. If your (usually old) car doesn't start you can be stuck. We have a good "on-demand" bus system in Marshall, but this covers mainly in town folks, a regional approach with some funding would be helpful. From Kate Hennessy of Marshall, MN on 05/13/05 Rating: Consider this. Bullet trains from Fargo, Duluth, Marshall and other points. Like capilaries the roads would feed to this mass transit system. Yes we will all pay for it but imagine, 95 degrees in the cities and in 45 minutes be out of the heat to Duluth, or vice versa. We would love to pop down to get out of the cold. Regards From Lee Sekar of Duluth, MN on 05/12/05 Rating: The most crucial factor in this quest to sustain rural areas, build micropolitan areas, and reduce the stresses on urban areas, is to develop affordable and accessible public transportation between micropolitan areas and the larger cities. From Abdullahi Noor of Marshall, MN on 05/12/05 Rating: Minnesota has a program like this - the county state aid highway fund. It is quite complex and full of rules, but the basic idea is that each county designates roads that will receive state aid to build/maintain. It is an imperfect system that is full of politics & playing games with funding, but the basic structure is already in place.
