Snapshot

Republican Gov. Jane Hull can't seek re-election, leaving a heated and increasingly bitter race to replace her. Republican nominee former U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon was in a tight race with Attorney General Janet Napolitano, the Democratic nominee. While the two are attacking each other in advertisements, independent candidate Richard Mahoney, a former secretary of state trailing badly in the polls, has ditched mainstream issues and is trying to woo voters by accusing the front-runners of being soft on a polygamist enclave in far northern Arizona. He charged that Napolitano hasn't done enough to stop polygamy in Colorado City and that Salmon's Mormon faith would prevent him from going after the church offshoot that encourages multiple marriages in that area. Businessman Barry Hess is the Libertarian candidate. Arizona received two new congressional districts courtesy of the 2000 census.
