Rock Island The idea for a railroad is conceived on Rock Island in 1845. The first trains go into service in 1852. Four years later it becomes the first railroad to cross the Mississippi River. By the end of the 19th century, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad is one of the biggest railroad companies in the western half of the country. |
