New York In the late 1930's, Lead Belly moves to New York City and begins to develop a following among folk musicians. "The Rock Island Line" becomes a regular part of his repertoire of songs. In 1944, he adds an unusual story to the song. It's the tale of a train engineer who tricks a depot agent into thinking he's carrying livestock when in fact his cargo is pig iron. |
